Deforestation

What is deforestation?

Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees to make space for something besides trees such as agriculture or grazing, or using the timber for fuel, construction or manufacturing.

What are the consequences?

Trees are a major source of oxygen in the air as they are of abundance in forests and exhale much of the oxygen in the surrounding area. Trees also take in the carbon dioxide for their survival so taking away trees rapidly creates an excess of carbon dioxide in the environment. Since trees also take in water to survive, they contain mass amounts of water and hold the earth together. Trees also give animals places to live, such as bird nests and squirrel holes. Indigenous people also depend on the forests for their own resources and culture. Deforestation leads to climate change, desertification, loss of habitats for animals, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the environment, and many problems for indigenous people of those areas.
